THE HOTEL WAS just as he expected, it being a Damian Strong rec and all. Clean, classy—and when he went to check in, he found it was also discounted. His brother had hooked him up with some insidery, Groupon-type deal he had. Lucas was thankful for Damian’s nonstop frugalness, if not for the fact that the clerk on duty chose to not hide said discount from Syd by blurting it out.

She raised a brow. “Come here often, do you?”

“Damian made the reservation.”

She frowned. “He’s a frequent guest?”

Lucas shrugged and gestured for her to walk ahead of him by waving their takeout bag in front of him as they headed toward the elevators that would take them to the top floor and the promised Executive Suite that Damian had raved about in his text. The casualness of the gesture and the fact that he was doing it with Syd wasn’t lost on him.

Would they even eat? Dammit, they should have just eaten in the car, or he should have done something better than sorry-assed takeout. Takeout and a late-night hotel. If this didn’t scream one-night stand, he didn’t know what did. But why should that bother him now? Because Sydney, of course. He’d been dodging anything permanent for so long, but in the back of his mind it had always been Syd. And now here she was, and he was making less effort with her than he had with any woman in he didn’t know how long. Was he intentionally trying to push her away while trying to pull her in at the same time?

“I don’t know. But with Damian, I do know he wouldn’t rec a place unless it was clean and safe. So I trust it. As for the rest, he’s a hard one to crack.”

She nodded and pursed her lips as he pressed the button for their floor. “He’s not the only one.”

Lucas laughed. “You should talk.”

The lurch of the elevator coming to an abrupt stop on their floor let them know this was definitely not the five-star Dame claimed it to be. But a person can’t have everything when it’s a late-night quick stop.

This felt all wrong! Why was she even still here with him? And why was he so nervous? It took a minute before he even realized that he was standing in front of their door with the key in hand.

“Don’t tell me you’re nervous.”

Lucas looked at Sydney. How could she appear so calm and act so cool after they’d spent so many years of on-and-off flirting that he barely knew which way was up?

Suddenly her lips were on his. Again. She had him up against the doorjamb, pressing in hard while she was soft and lush, and he was just about ready to melt into a puddle on the hallway floor.

Get it together, Lucas!

He reached around her, trying to be smooth with it. The takeout bag crinkled when he shifted the key card in his fingers and simultaneously pulled her in even closer, and damn, her ass was fine as hell.
